The journey is hard, and without food, medicine, proper clothing or first aid, more rebels die. Some of the rebels die, and Lena and others barely escape with their lives. But the government bombs the homestead before the rebels can leave. ![]() She sends scouts ahead to mark the way and bury food. With cold weather approaching, Raven decides it is time for the rebels to move to another homestead in the South for the winter. After Lena is nursed back to health at a rebel’s homestead, she slowly becomes a part of their community, learning that life in the Wilds is much more physically demanding than life in the city. ![]() Near death, Lena is rescued by a group of rebels led by a young woman named Raven and her second in command, Tack. The last time Lena saw Alex, he had been shot as an army of men descended on him. Alex gave himself up so Lena could escape into the Wilds to avoid “the cure,” which is a government mandate for delirium. Lena is wracked with guilt and sadness over losing Alex, the rebel boy she fell in love with, even though love (amor deliria nervosa or delirium) has been declared a disease by the U.S. The story begins right after Lena’s dramatic escape from Portland, Maine, which left her wandering, injured and alone, through the Wilds, the unregulated area outside the city. I’m not sure I could have stood the torture of having to wait a year to find out Lena’s fate.Pandemonium is told from two perspectives: “Then,” when Lena first enters the Wilds, and “Now,” when Lena is living in New York City pretending to be cured while spying for the resistance. Thank goodness I’ve already got my hands on a copy of the trilogy’s conclusion: Requiem. ‘Holy sh*t’ is the phrase that springs to mind. Plus, if you thought the cliffhanger at the end of Delirium was bad, wait until you get to the last page of Pandemonium. Lauren Oliver has a way of really making you connect with the characters, which makes reading her work an experience, like you’re sprinting alongside them rather than watching them from afar. Pandemonium is jam-packed full of action, and plenty of moments where you can actually feel your heart squeezing in your chest (to me, that’s a sign of a truly good book). It’s a pretty mean feat to be able to pull this off without making things complicated and confusing, but Lauren Oliver has achieved it perfectly. Delirium was a pretty straight forward story with a narrative that took us from A to B, but Pandemonium shakes it up a bit with a ‘then’ and ‘now’ structure that takes the reader back and forth in time chapter by chapter. In fact, Pandemonium is one of those rare cases when the sequel is ten times better than the first in the series, and I had already given Delirium a five star rating.Īnd it’s not just the new characters that make Pandemonium such a great read, it’s also the new structure that Lauren Oliver has introduced. ![]() ![]() I don’t want to spoil anything here, but I will say that Pandemonium adds some new characters into the mix that lead Lena’s story in a whole new direction. She’s questioned love and the life-changing and agonising choices that come with it. I hoped that this sequel would pull us back up again, and that it did, but in a way that I absolutely had not expected. Lauren Oliver left us with an enormous cliffhanger at the end of Delirium, Pandemonium’s captivating predecessor. Pandemonium (book two of the Delirium trilogy) – Lauren Oliver

There's no word yet on a European price, but it will cost 3990 yen (about £23) in Japan, where the last-gen console version will arrive before Christmas. This new version will include 1080p visuals (720p for last-gen consoles) and 5.1 surround support. This is a familiar game, but one that's now markedly more dynamic: from being previously sceptical about the worth of a remake, I'm now fascinated to see how that new dynamism finds its way into the rest of this reimagined Resident Evil 4.The original Resident Evil game is being remastered for release on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, Capcom has announced.ĭue for a digital-only launch in early 2015, the new port is based on the game's 2002 GameCube "REmake". The brevity of the demo meant it was possible to play through a couple of times and prod at some of the new features to see what outcomes might ensue - and with new stealth options, new behaviours from familiar foes and a much richer set of permutations. It's a surprising new crinkle to a set-piece that by this point - and after this many versions - was in danger of feeling rote. He now boasts an oddly redesigned visage with bulging eyes set far apart - which makes it look like it's Hey Arnold under that sack - and it's now possible to coax him to destroy a porch, opening up a whole new part of the level. When the chainsaw man arrives on the scene - a moment that's just as terrifying now as it was back in 2005 - there are clear signs of a makeover. There's dynamism in the environment, too - the cattle that sit in the barn can be prodded into action by shooting out a lantern that promptly sets them alight, sending a chunk of freshly roasted beef into the mobs which can duly help your cause. Yes, it does seem that Leon's overstated roundhouse from the original is still there to push a rabid villager away, but it's not quite as commonplace as it once was with new QTE-fuelled close quarter combat sequences adding some more variety. Get too close to villagers, too, and there's a variety of ways things can play out. It's not entirely clear how you restore durability to the weapon from what we played, though perhaps Resident Evil 4's infamous merchant has a way to sharpen it once you finally encounter him. That knife, too, is substantially different, with some form of durability attached to it - far from the most popular mechanic in games, sure, but understandable in this instance to ensure you're not overly reliant on it. ![]() ![]() The villagers are still a shuffling mass, but there's a bit more thought behind their movements and a lot more options when it comes to dealing with them there are now stealth takedowns possible, enabled by Leon's knife that can be handily plunged into their necks. It's short, but even within the handful of minutes available in the hands-on it's clear there have been some fairly drastic changes with the rhythm of the whole encounter altered entirely. The section on offer for this brief preview is perhaps the original's most memorable, the scene in El Pueblo as you first encounter the villagers. Perhaps most importantly, there's an extra floppiness to Leon's curtains, and an extra fluffiness to the collar of his famous jacket. There are some truly disturbing sights here, from fresh corpses of recently ripped apart rabbits to the enhanced horror of seeing a villager tied to the stake in astounding new detail. In keeping with other games that have excellently employed Capcom's RE Engine, this is a proper looker with moody lighting and an incredible *wetness* to the gore. ![]() The original Resident Evil 4 has aged admirably and still looks pretty fine today, but it doesn't look quite like this. What exactly can a remake bring to make it worth playing through again? Going hands-on with a short section of the forthcoming remake showed there's a fair amount to make it more than worthwhile, and this remake provides an effective remix of some moments we know inside out, refreshing them enough to make it feel like you're playing through this classic for the first time.īefore we get to that, though, there's obviously a fairly hefty visual makeover in effect here. ![]() When Capcom announced it was giving Resident Evil 4 the same remake treatment it gave RE2 and RE3 recently, eyebrows were understandably raised. Availability: Out March 24th 2023 on PC, Xbox Series S/X and PS4/5.There was a waggle-enhanced Wii version, HD versions for the Xbox 360 and PS3, mobile versions for Android and iOS and VR versions for Oculus Quest - by this point, Capcom's iconic survival horror feels as ubiquitous as Skyrim. It's been a hot topic of late about when a classic game is ripe for a remake, but given how Resident Evil 4 seems to have been rolled out for re-release in one shape or another almost annually since it first appeared in 2005 it feels like a special case.
